Health Humility

Are you like me, did you at one time think you were invincible, that you always were going to feel and perform like you did when you were 25?  Sure, we knew intellectually that would not always be the case, we witnessed the diminution of our elders, but we never thought someday that would be us.  Well, we were wrong.

One of the most challenging aspects of aging is the degree to which we must admit to, and deal with, physical or mental changes.  No matter how hard we try, no matter how good our exercise programs or diets are, things are going to eventually go wonky.  Ears, eyes, hearts, brains, dicks, joints, backs, whatever, at some point they are going to not work like they used to.

So how do we face these challenges?  First, we have humility and admit that we are human, a tough task for some of us. Secondly, we have gratitude for all those years that whatever part functioned properly.  All of those feats we could perform at 25 are way in the rear view mirror for most of us, but we should be thankful for those halcyon days of youth when we could do them.   Lastly, and most importantly, we deal with the issue.  We don’t whine or complain about it. We acknowledge it, we don’t try to hide or ignore it and we deal with it head on.  We engage the proper professional, often a doctor, to diagnose and address the problem.  Then, in a disciplined and resolute manner we march forward, accepting with humility whatever medicine, literal or figurative, that we have to take.

The Old Man will always be finding ways to worm his way into our lives, but we must remain ready, willing and able to keep the bastard out!
