The KOMO Award

What is the KOMO Award?

Periodically, we will profile an older individual who deserves a shoutout for a display of noteworthy physical and/or intellectual achievement.  This is known as the KOMO award, which is an acronym for Keeping the Old Man Out.

This week’s award goes to Doug McPhail.  Doug, age 72, recently completed the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge.  This event, run since 1996, is a 37-mile trek through rugged terrain near Pittsburgh.  The trail involves 8000 feet of elevation change.

Mr. McPhail had to drop out of last year’s event, but was successful on a recent Saturday, completing the grueling event in just under 15 hours.  Hiking 37 miles through steep terrain in a day would be an accomplishment for anyone, but to do it at 72 is special. Doug is definitely keeping the old man out!

May he serve as an inspiration to us all.
